March 23, 2004: Yesterday at the qualifying Evgeni was the first in his group. He did an almost flawless program, the only mistake was that he doubled the Salchow. He did 4 Toeloop - 3 Toeloop and 3 Axel, 3 Axel - 3 Toeloop, 3 Lutz, 2 Salchow, 3 Flip, 3 Loop.
It was the last time Evgeni skated to St. Petersburg 300 and it was really wonderful. The audience was very supportive and cheered loudly at every element Evgeni did!

Quote of Evgeni after the qualifying:

This was a good performance, and everything is going according to plan. Now I have to relax and then attack tomorrow full force. This was just the beginning, and the battle goes on." (On coming back from his disappointing performance at the Europeans) "This is sport, and things like this happen in life. Falls happen, mistakes happen, and it happened to me at the Europeans. I’m prepared for things like this, and I can cope with them. I moved on." (On his knee injury) "It’s okay, I can skate, and that’s the most important thing."

March 21, 2004: Evgeni was practicing his Flamenco short program today. He did very well again, no mistakes and from everywhere I hear he feels very good. He did the combinations 4 Toeloop - 3 Toeloop and 4 Toeloop - 3 Loop and some triples. As he made a run through, through his program, he only did the footwork no jumps.

March 20, 2004: I am at Worlds (I could connect to the internet) and this morning I saw Evgeni's practice, he did very good no falls, he did a couple of clean axels also in combo with 3 toeloop. He was in a very good mood. Sorry I can't tell more, its hard for me to see the exact jumps when I see Evgeni live.

March 14, 2004:Evgeni plans to do a music video with famous ballet dancer Anastasia Volochkova, more info HERE

Right now Evgeni is preparing for the World Championships which will be on March 22th untill 28th, in Germany.

February 9, 2004: On a great surprise Evgeni skated today at the exhibition gala in Sarajevo in memory of the 20th anniversary of the 1984 Olympic Games. It wasn't announced anywhere that he would skate there. He skated to Supertramp "The Logical Song" that he performed first at "Art On Ice" last January. He did a double Axel and 3 Toeloop - 2 Toeloop - 2 Loop. Obviously it was supposed to be a gala for European Championships skaters and even though all the participants skated in order to their range from 4th place to 1st, Evgeni skated last in this show.

European Championships News and Results:

February 8, 2004: Evgeni skated at the exhibition his free skate "Tribute to Nijinsky" and wore his new costume. Edvin Marton, who composed his free skate music, was standing on the ice and played live the violin. Evgeni only went for a triple Toeloop and two double Axels and showed the Biellmann spin and a belly slide. As an encore he skated to Beethoven's symphony No. 5!! Again Edvin Marton, played it live which was really great! Evgeni did a 3 Toeloop-3 Toeloop-2 Loop combination followed by an double Axel and the "Flamenco" footwork."

February 7, 2004:Here is an interview of Evgeni after the competition: (originally comes from www.stog.ru )

Q: You were dethroned at Europeans...

Evgeni: There is still Worlds left. I will definetly take part in the World Championships in Dortmund and will try to defend my title. And prove that I can conquer my own nerves.

Q: Did defeat become a tragedy for you?

Evgeni: Not at all. Life goes on, there is room for highs and lows. You need to make correct conclusions, then victories will come again.

Q: Is your health alright?

Evgeni: Everything alright, meaning, in this season it's been worse. Either way, I'm not tempted to blame everything on injuries.

Q: Do you have a will to rest from the ice and skates?

Evgeni: I guess that's what I'll do. I'll get back to Petersburg and take a break. Get some good rest for a couple of days. Massage, swimming pool, banya-with honey and birch branches.

Q: Did you expect such a successful performance from Brian Joubert?

Evgeni: Of Course. He greatly improved this past year. For some reason everyone forgot that Europeans is a sports competion, not Plushenkofest. Defeat should serve a good purpose and become a ramp for the new rise.

Q: Will you change anything in your programs by Worlds?

Evgeni: No. The problem is not the program, but me.

Q: When did you feel that today is not your day?

Evgeni: When I fell on the flip. Getting up I already knew that I won't be European champion. I fought till the end, but this is sport. Here wins the strongest not overall, but in the given championship. Maybe Joubert needed today's triumph more than me.

February 5, 2004: Evgeni lost the European Championships and is second. The beginning of his program "Tribute to Nijinsky" (he had his new costume on, see "Photo of the Month" on this site) looked good as he landed very clean a 4-3-2 but then had sort of a breakdown and had very unusual falls wich I never seen of him, but bounced back and managed to land later the jumps but since Brian Joubert who won the competition had a strong clean program, he couldn't win this anymore.

His marks:

Tech: 5.4 5.4 5.5 5.5 5.6 5.6 5.6 5.6 5.7 5.7 5.7 5.7 5.7 5.8

February 3, 2004:Evgeni has won the short program! He earned a 6.0 in presentation! Though he wasn't 100% clean, he had a wobble on the first combination the 4 Toeloop then added only a 2 Toeloop but his 3Axel and 3 Lutz was crystal clean. He showed a lot of passion to the Flamenco music.

His marks:

February 2, 2004: Evgeni is placed first in his group of the qualification round, he was the first to skate so the marks even when he skated clean don't go in the high end. He landed his 4-3-2 and another 8 triples without mistakes.

January 2, 2004: This interesting article explains why Evgeni lost the Grand Prix Final and about the new judging system:

http://www.iceskatingintnl.com/current/content/plushenkoGPF.htm

January 1, 2004: Evgeni was voted by the visitors of the site http://www.rambler.ru as one of 58 "People of the year 2003". He is on 6th place. Here is the list of all "People of the Year": http://people.rambler.ru and the page of Evgeni: http://people.rambler.ru/face.html?s=43&year=2003 also there is a digital greeting card, featuring Evgeni and a message of him written by himself:
http://cards.rambler.ru/show_big.html?id=4952&s=382 The letter says:

"Dear Friends, I want to wish you a happy New Year! May you have strong health, happiness and love! Good luck in the new year!
E. Plushenko"

He also said about the internet:
"The internet is a great thing. Being in any part of the world you can see and read anything you want. I give the internet an "A"! Online I usually rest: play Gambler, download music. The internet is our future!"

December 28, 2003:A little interview of Evgeni where he comments on the result of the Grand Prix Final:

(Originally comes from: www.sovsport.ru)

Evgeni Plushenko’s second place in the final Grand-Pix in Colorado-Springs appeared to be a real sensation. Canadian Emanuel Sandhu has beaten invincible Russian skater. On coming back from the USA to St.Petersburg Evgeni Plushenko answered the questions of “The soviet sport”.

Q: Are you disappointed with this defeat?

Evgeni: Yes, a little bit. I think that in the Grand Prix Final a pure misunderstanding took place. Sandhu is a good skater but he is not a significant rival. I was beaten by the new judging system. Undoubtedly this system is a step backward in figure skating. Instead of a separate jump I did the combination and according to the new rules I got 0 points. After the competition all the judges came up to me and told that no doubts are on my victory. Tatiana Tarasova, by the way, also recognized this fact. She told me: “Zhenya, don’t worry about. You skated marvelously”.

Q: Are you anxious about the fact that such misunderstanding can happen on the World or Euro Championship?

Evgeni: I sincerely hope this unfair judging system will be changed soon. I’m going to write to ISU about it. I hope my letter won’t be disregarded.

Q: Does the shock disturb you for the Russian Nationals?

Evgeni: I wish it didn’t. I try not to get disappointed. I’m getting recovered doing some exercises. I hope to attain my best shape before the new competition. Of course I will gladly take part in the Russian Championship, which is to be held in St.Petersburg.
