World Championships News:

March 17, 2005: Evgeni has withdrawn from the World Championships. In an Eurosport live interview Evgeni stated that he is unable to defend his title today due to injury. He said his condition got worse and in the short program the injections to cover the pain didn't help that much so he didn't saw a chance to compete with the very strong skaters if he is not in top shape. Asked who he think would win the World Championship now, he said "It's difficult....the Swiss guy, he can win no problem!" He means Stephane Lambiel. He apologized to all his fans that he can't compete today...he said he will definitely try to come back next season...

March 15, 2005: Evgeni only finished 3rd after the short program with 73.28 points. Skating to his program "Moonlight Sonata" he had also only the 5th best short program in the scoring. The reason is that he fell on the quad and he lost to many points by it. The rest of the program was flawless with a triple axel and triple lutz, he even did the Biellmann spin after a long time again. His score is 73.28 and 111.26 overall. First is Stephane Lambiel (80.28 short prgram, 118.28 overall) who did a strong program as well as Brian Joubert who is second (79.66 short program, 112.66 overall) that means that Evgeni needs to gain 7.02 points more in the free skate then the others to win. Which is possible since he could get often 20-30 points more overall than the second placed skater but this time it can be difficult since he is not in very good health but hoping for the best!

In the first group of the qualification, Stefane Lambiel had a slight better score then Evgeni of 152.00 but he landed two quads. Tomorrow is the short program wich starts at 13.30 (Moscow time) and 25% of the score of the qualification will be added to the final result of the short program and Evgeni has now 37.98. (I hope I explained that well..)

Skating to the music of Moonlight Sonata, Evgeni had a step out on the quadruple toeloop and was a little low on the triple axel but the triple lutz was perfect. Joubert was clean having almost the same jumps (4t-2t, 3a, 3L).

Evgeni said: "I was a little tired and didn't feel comfortable. But everything will be OK for the free skating. It didn't work out today but I am still in the competition."

I begin with the most recent news: Evgeni is scheduled to skate at the "Marshalls World Cup of Figure Skating" on December 3 in Auburn Hills, Michigan/USA. Also there are negotiations about that he might perform at the ARD Gala on December 12 in Frankfurt/Germany but the organaizers still wait for permission of the federation. Cup of Russia results:

This was Evgeni's first competition this season last weekend wich he won by far with a 25.46 lead to Johnny Weir. Evgeni was just 1 point away from his personal best score and worlds best score of 234.29.

At the short program he fell on the quad toeloop then adding a double toeloop but wich wasn't counted. But he completed then a triple axel and triple lutz clean. In the presentation mark he got 7.75-8.05. That was still enogh to go in lead with 74.95 points. Here is full result page
After the short program Evgeni said:

"Well, this was my first important competition this year, and it was a bit hard. I was nervous. Overall I’m in a good shape and I’m well prepared. I got positive reactions on my program, but I can do this program a lot better in practice. I don’t understand the mistake on the quadruple toeloop. I already landed the jump and had skated half a meter when I suddenly fell."

He wore an old modified costume he had last season to the Flamenco program, there were a lot of sparkles added around the front part.

Here is a video about tv news about the short program: click here to see the video

At the free skate he showed his class again by completing a 4 toeloop - 3 toeloop, 3 axel, 3 axel - 2 toeloop, 3 lutz - 3 toeloop, 3 flip, 2 axel, 3 salchow and 3 loop. His only mistake was on the salchow with a step out. He skated to his new program "Godfather" and had a new costume, here is a picture.

Evgeni said after the free skate: "It was an okay performance for my first serious competition but I can do better. It was enough to do one quadruple here and two triple Axels. I do a second quaduple jump (Salchow) in practice but we decided not to include it in the program here. My season started late. I have been sick with pneumonia and otitis (ear inflamation) and I'm not at 100 per cent yet but I think I'll be in top shape at worlds."

November 20, 2004: Thanks to Hande from Istanbul for some pictures from Art on Ice in Praque! Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3

November 7, 2004: Here is a report from Szabina who visited the Art on Ice show in Budapest and Evgeni did not skater there either. Here she explains why:

Plushenko did not skate. He was not even there to apologize. However, I had a chance to talk to Oliver Höner, the head of AOI, who has told me the story. Plushenko was in Prague all week practicing for the show and it was only on Friday when he was eventually told by ISU that he must not skate. It was because of his withdrawal from the GP series. They have tried everything to convince the ISU people to change their attitude but, unfortunately, with no results. ISU has insisted on that if Evgeni is well enough to skate at the show he, being a seeded skater, should be in Japan at this moment. Finally, Evgeni had to understand that in case he would go get on the ice with the show now he would jeopardize his amateur status. He and his managers are very upset about this treatment. Zhenya was feeling so bad for not being allowed to skate that he could not even take another turn of apologies in Budapest. He rather stayed away from the ice rink and left home.

Here are also more pics of an tv report.

November 6, 2004: At Art on Ice yesterday in Praque, Evgeni wasn't able to skate. It's no injury or anything, he is doing well, it seems obvious that the ISU didn't allow him in the last moment to skate there because he withdrew from the NHK Trophy wich is held at the same time as Art on Ice. The audince was demanding him to skate and Evgeni came out 3 times to tell sorry: "Today is the hardest day in my career and in my life because I stay here in front of you and I can't skate for you." There was no specific reason given though, thats why the audience was a bit upset....Instead that Evgeni skated at the show they showed on a screen the recording of the rehersal of his planed programs "Godfather" and "I will survive". If he skates today in Budapest at Art on Ice is not known yet.

November 2, 2004: Evgeni was visiting Praque a week ago prior his performances at Art on Ice on November 5. Here are pictures of an tv special of that visit: Page 1 Page 2

October 28, 2004: Evgeni has competed in a competition from October 26-27 called "Second stage of Cup of Russia" in Samara/Russia wich is usually mostly for Russian youth skaters, I heard the first time from it so I can't tell for sure. He decided to go there to show the new programs to the audience and judges in a competition before the Grand Prix Cup of Russia (end of November) and he was so successful!
He skated his new programs, the short program "Moonlight Sonata", receiving marks of 5.4-5.5 in tech and 5.9 in presentation and the new free skate "Godfather" where he did an incredible performance, he did for the first time a quad Salchow! He also completed another quad Toeloop and two triple Axels. He earned marks of all 5.8 in tech and in presentation four perfect 6.0's and the rest 5.9!! Thats makes alltogether 63 times the 6.0 in his whole career! They are still using the old 6.0 judging system but at the Grand Prix Cup of Russia (his next competition) they will use the new "Code of Points" system. He still wore old costumes for the for the short program (from Flamenco) and free skate from the "Once upon a time in America" program. I guess no need to mention that with that result he won the competition of course. Article

Click here to see a video with small parts of his performance as well as an interview.

Check the Schedule for his next competitions (and exhibitions) where he definitely will take part in.

From: http://www.rtr-sport.ru/doc.html?id=208896&cid=70

Plushenko has declined Grand Prix

Russian skater Evgeny Plushenko plans declining the Grand Prix events. ITAR-TASS reports that his coach Alexei Mishin made the announcement on Wendsday.

"Looking at last year's results, Plushenko and I are satisfied", says Mishin. "The skater competed seven times, and won five; he missed only twice, at Grand Prix Final and at Europeans. The season before that was also jam packed -- we took part in and won five championships. However, Evgeni and I now realize that too many competitions can not bring optimal results. Considering the illness, the remnants of which should be healed, as well as to comply with the doctors' recommendations and to avoid risk, we chose a different strategy." According to the coach, they deliberately give up the "long fight approach", and will not "skate in each major championship". "The upcoming season will be very long, and will stretch to a full year and a half, all the way to 2006 Olympics," reminded Mishin. "We must peak at Turin's Olympics. That means developing a new preparation scheme. We will take the new startegy into account when deciding to take place in any competitions. So we must refuse many lucrative deals (one Grand Prix event can bring as much as $50.000). I'd like to emphasize that we consider the 2005 Worlds in Moscow and 2006 Olympics to be the important events. Accordingly, we'd like to appologize to ISU, the Russian Figure Skating Federation, and to foreign federations for being unable to represent our country at international competitions. We hope to be properly undertood: we sacrifice medals and prizes in the name of a higher goal. We announce this openely and in a timely manner. We hope to not deny the audience Plushenko's skating, so the fans will definitely see Evgeni at the exhibitions", concluded the coach.
